Logic and Lotteries Failed To Persuade The Vaccine Resistant. But Pain Might
An old copywriting tenet might be our last shot
The mayor of my town recently announced that 89% of eligible residents were fully vaccinated, and there hadn’t been a single case reported during the entire month of July.
Likes, loves, and celebratory comments flooded the social media post. We had done it, exceeded vaccination goals, and beaten the crap out of Covid.
Seven days have passed since that announcement. The upbeat mood has since vanished, replaced by anger, incredulity, and frustration as the delta variant infiltrated our formerly bulletproof sanctuary. True, it was never really bulletproof, but with only 4 cases in 50 days, it was damn close.
According to a CDC report leaked on 7/29 (now published officially), we know that 369 vaccinated people became infected with the Covid Delta variant in Barnstable county in Massachusetts.
Nobody died. That’s the good news. The vaccine seems to protect us against severe disease. The bad news is that 40% of adults still aren’t fully vaccinated.
Let’s be honest. Lotteries didn’t work. Neither did logic. We’re not going to convince the unvaccinated with reasoned arguments. The anti-vax media networks continue to…
