Would it surprise you to learn that you make over thirty thousand decisions per day? That’s what some sources claim — all from the internet, which immediately makes the number suspect. But depending on how you define “decision,” the total could be even higher.

Consider this.

After reading each word in this story, you decide whether to continue or stop and that alone puts you over one thousand decisions in the next few minutes.

Regardless of the actual topline number, decision-making is an essential component of the human experience, and it’s not just those rare once per decade choices that matter:

  • Should I move to New York or Seattle?
  • Should I major in biology or business?
  • Should I break the engagement or marry someone I don’t love?

Decisions like those above get all the attention and often demand a rigorous analysis to make the proper judgment. Years later, we look back on them and recognize the significance of our choices. Still, monumental decisions like those are rare.
