For most of my life, I never had to worry about feeding myself or paying rent. Only once did it ever become a serious concern.

I took a disastrous swing in the entrepreneurial world and emerged with a near-empty bank account. Thanks to a bit of hustling, I finagled my way into a decent job with a week’s worth of money to spare.

When you’re hyper-focused on making ends meet, you waste little time on luxury virtues like living a more rewarding life. You focus solely on minute-by-minute concerns like finding a job, conserving cash, and holding onto your sanity.

That’s what life was like during those few months of financial worry. Years later, I still lived life as though I were in survival mode. And in some ways, I had always lived that way — trudging through each day in a state of low-grade anxiety, reacting to minute-by-minute urges.

Not destructive ones, just ordinary everyday desires that distracted me from pursuing quality relationships and meaningful goals.

The Unfulfilling Promise Of Ancient Philosophy
